Johnson trims GOP funding bill to prevent shutdown.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has introduced a new bill to prevent a government shutdown, following the defeat of his previous spending bill that included controversial non-citizen voting legislation. Johnson called for a “very narrow, bare-bones CR” to fund the government until Sept. 30.

The new bill, funding the government through Dec. 20, also includes an additional $231 million for the Secret Service. Johnson acknowledged that the bill may not be ideal but emphasized the importance of avoiding a shutdown so close to the election.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed cautious support for the new legislation, noting its absence of “partisan, right-wing policy changes.” The Democrats will evaluate the spending bill as a whole before making a decision.

Johnson highlighted the potential political backlash of a shutdown, citing survey results showing opposition from voters across the political spectrum. The House will move forward with passing the new bill to prevent a Senate bill with additional spending and unrelated provisions.
