Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), Serge Brammertz, visited Montenegro to prepare for his report to the United Nations Security Council. He met with key officials including the President, Prime Minister, and Ministers, commending Montenegro’s efforts in prosecuting war crimes and praising their cooperation with the IRMCT. Brammertz highlighted the assistance provided to Montenegro in identifying suspects and providing evidence of war crimes.
Discussions also focused on regional cooperation and reconciliation, with Montenegro showing a positive approach towards working with neighboring countries on prosecuting war crimes. Brammertz will continue discussions in Bosnia and Herzegovina next week. The Prosecutor emphasized the need to increase resources for the Special State Prosecutor’s Office in Montenegro to handle war crimes cases effectively, as outlined in the National War Crimes Investigation Strategy.
Brammertz will present his findings to the UNSC later this year after visiting Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Montenegro’s commitment to justice for war crimes and fostering positive relations with neighboring countries was emphasized during the meetings.
