Voters in the rural Nova Scotia district of Pictou West are gearing up for a byelection on Tuesday, following the retirement of the riding’s former representative, Karla MacFarlane. The Progressive Conservatives had a strong hold on the district in the 2021 election, with Tim Houston quickly calling the byelection for May 21.
Newcomer to politics, Marco MacLeod, is running for the Tories in a bid to retain the seat. While the Liberals and NDP also have candidates vying for the position, many believe the PC’s will likely maintain control of the riding.
Healthcare and the cost of living are key issues for voters in the district, according to the candidates. The outcome of the byelection won’t necessarily be an indication of the government’s overall strength, as a provincial election must be called by next July.
With the Tories currently holding the majority of seats in the legislature, all eyes are on Pictou West as voters head to the polls.
