A 65-year-old man has been arrested in Rome over the 1977 murder of two women in their home in Melbourne, Australian police said Saturday. The suspect, a dual Australian-Greek citizen, is being sought for the stabbing deaths of 27-year-old Suzanne Armstrong and 28-year-old Susan Bartlett. The breakthrough in the case reportedly came from a DNA sample from a relative, linking the man to the crime after years of investigation.
The suspect had been living in Greece and was protected by the country’s statute of limitations. However, he was arrested at an airport in Rome and is now in custody. The murders, known as the Easey Street murders, have been a priority for Victoria Police for over four decades. The bodies of the two women were found with multiple stab wounds, with Armstrong’s young son found unharmed in his cot.
Chief Commissioner Shane Patton expressed the gravity of the crime, stating, “This was a crime that struck at the heart of our community — two women in their own home, where they should have felt their safest.” The arrest marks a significant development in a case that has haunted Melbourne for years.
