The Hong Kong authorities are considering easing restrictions on seafood imports from 10 Japanese prefectures after Beijing decided to gradually lift its ban on Japanese seafood imports. The Environment and Ecology Bureau will gather more information from Tokyo and Beijing to evaluate if it is safe to relax preventive measures based on scientific evidence.
Beijing’s decision to resume imports came after talks with Japan, following a ban imposed a year ago due to treated waste water released from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The Hong Kong government expressed concerns about the 30-year projection and 1.3 million tonnes of waste water to be discharged.
