As summer temperatures soar in Johannesburg, residents are facing prolonged water outages, particularly in high-lying areas, due to strained water systems. Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo emphasized the importance of responsible water use as the three metropolitan municipalities exceed their water consumption allocations.
Recent outages in Killarney left residents without water for six days, attributed to high consumption by Johannesburg Water. While water has now been restored, concerns remain about the underlying issues with the water supply.
Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala explained that the Parktown 2 Reservoir experienced supply problems due to high demand caused by the heatwave. Water shortages have impacted various suburbs, including Killarney, but the system is slowly recovering.
WaterCAN executive manager Ferrial Adam highlighted ongoing challenges with the water system, emphasizing the need for residents to adhere to water restrictions to conserve resources. Aging infrastructure and high water losses compound the issue, leading to continued outages.
Despite the difficulties, Johannesburg Water is working to stabilize supply and enforce restrictions to manage demand. It’s crucial for residents to conserve water and comply with regulations to prevent further disruptions.
