A new campaign called ‘Gen Free: Free to be Kids’ has been launched to advocate for greater protections for children online. The campaign, a collaboration between multiple organizations, aims to ensure a safer digital environment for children.
It calls for specific legislation to safeguard children online and proposes smartphone-free primary and secondary schools until such laws are implemented. Additionally, ‘Gen Free’ advocates for the inclusion of digital literacy as a core component of the education system.
The campaign also seeks to provide resources for parents on online safety education and raise awareness about the risks of excessive screen time for children. The official campaign launch took place at Temple Carrig Secondary School in Greystones, with Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly in attendance.
Supporting existing efforts by organizations like CyberSafeKids and Temple Carrig Secondary School, ‘Gen Free’ emphasizes the responsibility of online companies to fund measures that protect children online. Teachers like Eoghan Cleary are actively involved in promoting online safety within schools and communities.
