Indictments Filed in Coverup of Sexual Offenses at Gilboa Prison
Three individuals have been indicted by the Tiberias Magistrate’s Court for their involvement in covering up sexual offenses against female jailers by Palestinian inmates at the Gilboa Prison. Mahmoud Atallah, a Palestinian prisoner, was charged with raping a female IDF prison guard and sexually assaulting another. The case dates back to incidents between 2015-2016 and 2016-2017.
An investigation was initially launched in 2017 after a complaint from a female guard, leading to insufficient evidence against the prison officers. However, in 2020, the State Attorney’s Office filed an indictment against Atallah. Following a recent review, indictments were also filed against Bassem Kashkosh and Rani Basha for breach of trust and failure to act on complaints against Atallah.
The case resurfaced in 2021 when former prison commander Freddy Ben Shitrit testified about the sexual assaults. The court rejected defense arguments, leading to the official filing of the indictments. The charges bring to light the serious breaches within the prison system and the need for accountability.
