An Islamic party in Malaysia is vowing to shut down the country’s only casino in central Pahang state if it wins control, in line with Islamic teachings that prohibit gambling. Parti Islam Se-Malaysia is aiming to expand its influence by addressing the concerns of the Muslim majority. Since becoming the largest party in federal parliament in 2022, PAS has gained control of four states and now has its sights set on Pahang.
Deputy commissioner Andansura Rabu stated, “Gambling is harmful, so we have to close it,” underscoring the party’s stance during their annual gathering. However, the final decision on casino operations lies with the federal government in Malaysia, which tightly regulates the gaming sector with no plans to open another casino resort, as confirmed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
