Comoros President Azali Assoumani was “slightly wounded” in a knife attack at a funeral of a religious leader on Friday, September 13. The attacker has been arrested, and the president’s injuries are not serious as confirmed by a government spokeswoman.
Detailing the incident, government minister Aboubacar Said Anli mentioned that a civilian was also injured while trying to protect the president. Witnesses described the attacker as a 22-year-old with no prior criminal record, who managed to injure the president’s hand before being stopped by another mourner.
Azali Assoumani, a former military leader turned president, faced unrest following a disputed re-election in January. The Comoros, known for political instability with numerous coups since independence from France, continues to grapple with challenges despite recent events.
