Two people confronted the man and accused him of breaking into homes and stealing property on Rosebery Road in Guilford about 9pm.
CCTV captured the conversation, with the men looking tense.
“Hey brother,” one of the men is heard saying.
The 42-year-old, who appeared to wearing a high-vis vest, denied the accusations before making a run for it.
“I heard people saying, ‘What did you steal’, then I saw a group of guys grabbing this guy,” a witness told 9News.
“For you [people] that steal, just remember that Guildford is not the way to go, just remember that.”
The man faced Parramatta Court today after being charged with entering a property with the intent to commit a crime, and other offences.
He was denied bail by the magistrate after being accused of dozens of other offences since May.
