Living in deprived areas in Ireland is linked to poorer health outcomes, as per new research by Pobal, a government agency supporting social inclusion and development. The study highlights the urgent need to address health inequality gaps and improve health and social care services in less affluent areas.
The research revealed that individuals in the most disadvantaged areas are significantly more likely to report poor health and disability compared to those in affluent areas. Children in extremely deprived areas exhibit disability rates similar to people nearing retirement in wealthier regions.
Interestingly, urban deprived areas show slightly higher disability rates than rural deprived areas. Alana Ryan, Pobal’s Research and Policy Manager, noted that rural areas have comparatively lower disability rates than urban areas.
The study, which analyzed data from Census 2022 and the Pobal HP Deprivation Index, underscores a strong relationship between area deprivation levels and reported health issues. It emphasizes the importance of targeted interventions to bridge these health disparities and enhance overall well-being in disadvantaged communities.
