Protests Erupt in Maban County as Locals Demand Commissioner’s Removal
Angry protesters in Bunj town of Maban County, Upper Nile State, took to the streets to demand the immediate ouster of County Commissioner Peter Alberto, a member of the opposition SPLM-IO. The demonstrations were sparked by allegations of abuse of power, illegal market campaigns, and mismanagement of county resources.
Juma Lago Yoya, a tribal leader, stated that the commissioner’s actions had led to scarcity of goods and price hikes in the market, prompting the community to protest peacefully for their rights. The demonstrators demanded the return of county vehicles, recovery of funds taken by the security committee, and removal of the commissioner from office.
Maban County Youth Union Chairman James Daud emphasized that the protests were a response to the commissioner’s autocratic behavior, which included shutting down civil offices and seizing public property. Despite the peaceful nature of the demonstrations, the security committee detained the commissioner for his safety.
The protesters dispersed after authorities promised to address their grievances, highlighting a call for accountability and transparency in local governance.
