A former German soldier facing trial for taking hostages in a cafe with a fake weapon started the proceedings by confessing to his actions. The 44-year-old, who apologized through his defense lawyer, claimed he didn’t intend to harm anyone and was actually contemplating suicide.
During the incident in January in Ulm, Germany, he threatened hostages with a realistic-looking fake weapon before being shot by police when he exited the cafe. Fortunately, none of the hostages were physically harmed in the ordeal.
The perpetrator’s mental health issues may play a significant role in determining his punishment, with a possible outcome being court-ordered treatment in a psychiatric facility. The defendant is facing charges of coercion among others, and a verdict could be expected by mid-October, according to the public prosecutor.
Despite the dramatic events that unfolded, the court will have to consider all factors before reaching a decision on the case.
