Violence Erupts in Manipur: Six Dead in Ethnic Clashes
In a tragic turn of events, six people, including one civilian, lost their lives as fresh violence erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur, India. The clashes stem from a dispute over extending economic benefits and quotas to the Meitei community, leading to more than 225 deaths and 60,000 displacements.
The recent escalation saw drones being used to drop explosives, marking a significant shift in tactics. Although police suspect Kuki militants to be behind the attacks, Kuki groups deny any involvement. The situation remains tense, with security forces deployed to quell the violence.
The state of Manipur, divided into Meitei-controlled valleys and Kuki-dominated hills, has been reeling from the conflict since May 2023. Recent incidents, including the killing of a civilian in his sleep and a rocket attack on a former chief minister’s house, have prompted authorities to close schools and heighten security measures.
