In a bid to bridge the gap between seasoned farmers and young individuals disinterested in agriculture, the Ondo State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Olayato Aribo, revealed that over 4,500 youths have been trained in modern farming techniques through state youth development programs. The previous administration under the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu had sold off all state-owned tractors at subsidized rates to private entities.
Aribo emphasized the government’s commitment to empowering young farmers and increasing food production in the state. A hiring tractor company has been engaged to clear land for farming, as tractors face limitations in forested areas compared to the savannah in the North. Despite some tractors being reported as parked at the Government House, the commissioner clarified that most were sold off, leaving only one within the state’s possession.
Recognizing the urgency in boosting agricultural output, Aribo explained the decision to work with a hiring tractor company for immediate access to equipment. The state aims to enhance food security by offering discounts on tractor services and utilizing available land resources efficiently.
