Despite a year passing since Morocco’s catastrophic earthquake in the High Atlas mountains, only around 1,000 homes out of 55,000 have been reconstructed, leaving thousands still living in tents enduring extreme weather conditions. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake in September 2023 claimed over 2,900 lives and devastated traditional houses in Amazigh-speaking villages.
Residents at the epicenter have expressed frustration over the sluggish pace of reconstruction, calling for more transparency in aid distribution and better investment in infrastructure and social services. The government has stated that 97% of households are receiving assistance, with 63,800 families receiving a monthly stipend.
With plans to allocate 120 billion dirhams towards reconstruction over the next five years, Morocco aims to revitalize the affected areas and enhance infrastructure. Despite the economic losses amounting to 0.24% of the country’s GDP, efforts are being made to rebuild and support the communities affected by the disaster.
