North Korea Census: North Korea recently initiated a national population and household census in response to severe floods in July. Approved by Kim Jong Un himself after a proposal from the national police agency, the census began on August 24.
Designated primary census areas include cities like Pyongyang and Nampo, along with provinces severely affected by heavy rains. The Ministry of Social Security aims to gather accurate population and household data to improve public control methods and restore the reputation of law enforcement organizations following missteps during the floods.
Civilian workers are being recruited to update household registries, while neighborhood watch leaders and officials visit homes to collect information on residents, births, deaths, and missing individuals. The data collected will help revise population registration documents and enhance the state’s disaster response capabilities.
Expected to be completed by October, the census serves as a crucial step in the regime’s efforts to develop effective state control systems. This comprehensive initiative underscores North Korea’s commitment to managing its population and improving emergency preparedness.
