Sweden’s top diplomat, Tobias Billstrom, shocked the political world on Wednesday with his announcement of resignation and departure from politics at the age of 50.
In his statement to X, Billstrom expressed a mix of “sadness and pride” as he informed Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of his decision without giving a specific reason.
Having served as foreign minister since the coalition government took office in October 2022, Billstrom revealed his plans to leave his parliamentary seat upon the parliament’s reopening next week, leaving his future endeavors wide open.
During his time as Sweden’s top diplomat, the country successfully joined NATO after a rigorous process involving convincing key nations like Turkey and Hungary, marking a significant shift in the country’s military alignment.
In the wake of global security concerns, including the war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East, Billstrom emphasized the gravity of the current international situation and wished his successor the best of luck.
The unexpected resignation coincided with the departure of Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba, underlining a major shakeup in political circles.
