In a shocking announcement, the United States has brought criminal charges against top Hamas leaders for their involvement in the deadly 7 October attack in southern Israel. Yahya Sinwar, the chief of the militant group, along with at least five others, are accused of orchestrating the attack that resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people, including more than 40 Americans. This attack led to a devastating Israeli assault on Gaza, resulting in the deaths of more than 40,800 people.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that the defendants, supported by Iran and Hezbollah, have been leading Hamas’ efforts to destroy Israel and harm civilians. The six defendants named in the complaint include Sinwar, Khaled Meshaal, and Ali Baraka, with three others who are now deceased.
The conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate, with Iran blaming Israel for the death of former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. US prosecutors had initially kept the charges against the Hamas leaders under seal, waiting to capture Haniyeh. However, they have now made the charges public following his death.
