Tragedy struck the main prison in Kinshasa, Congo, as at least 129 people died in an attempted escape, with most succumbing to a crush. The incident, which occurred at the overcrowded Makala Central Prison, also left 24 inmates shot dead in “warning” shots by authorities. Congo’s Interior Minister Jacqumin Shabani revealed that the government had tended to 59 wounded individuals, including women who were assaulted during the escape.
Makala Central Prison, with a capacity of 1,500, currently houses over 12,000 inmates, as reported by Amnesty International.
