UK Decision to Partially Suspend Arms Export Licenses to Israel Sparks Controversy
The United Kingdom’s recent move to suspend almost 30 arms export licenses to Israel has ignited a storm of criticism, particularly from leading British Jews. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis lambasted the decision, calling it counter-productive and encouraging to Hamas.
Mirvis pointed out the timing of the suspension, coinciding with the burial of six hostages murdered by Hamas. He emphasized Israel’s commitment to upholding International Humanitarian Law, despite the UK’s concerns.
Amidst the backlash, Board of Deputies of British Jews president Phil Rosenberg expressed concern about the message the move sends to Hamas. The Labour Friends Of Israel also criticized the decision, fearing it would embolden Iran and its proxies.
Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, condemned the decision, questioning the UK government’s allegiance. The suspended export licenses included components vital for military operations in Gaza.
While the UK justified the move as a commitment to human rights, concerns about its impact on Israel’s security and stability continue to surface.
