Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s escape from Bangladesh amid a student-led revolution has placed her as a diplomatic challenge for India. She ruled Bangladesh with an iron fist for 15 years before being ousted following widespread protests.
Students who led the uprising are demanding her return to face trial for crimes committed during the revolt, but India, her main supporter, is hesitant to send her back. This reluctance could affect India’s relationship with other countries in the region, particularly with China.
India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has taken a strong stance against Hasina and supported the new government led by Nobel laureate Muhummad Yunus. Modi has also raised concerns about the safety of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority, a group that faced violence following Hasina’s departure.
Despite diplomatic tensions, both countries have refrained from discussing Hasina’s refuge in India publicly, with an extradition treaty in place that could facilitate her return for trial.
