The EU and New Zealand have just put into effect an agreement allowing the exchange of personal data between Europol and New Zealand authorities. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in their fight against serious organized crime and terrorism.
Key provisions in the agreement cover information exchange, data protection, data subjects’ rights, supervisory authority setup, and redress mechanisms. This landmark agreement falls under the 2017 Europol Regulation, enabling the transfer of personal data to a third country based on EU-third country agreements.
Effective from 15 August 2024, this agreement amplifies the partnership initiated in 2019 through the existing Working Arrangement between New Zealand Police and Europol. The arrangement facilitates knowledge sharing, strategic analysis, training, and support for criminal investigations between New Zealand and Europol.
New Zealand gains exclusive access to Europol’s communication channel and stations a Liaison Officer at Europol’s headquarters, deepening their collaboration and strengthening efforts against transnational crime.
