The co-chair of ECOWAS joint committees on Social Affairs, Gender and Women Empowerment, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights, Snowe Edwin, addressed concerns regarding the free movement protocols in West Africa. He emphasized that the protocols do not compromise national security but instead promote seamless movement for citizens within member states.
Edwin highlighted the importance of respecting the protocols while conducting necessary security checks at borders. He warned against the misuse of security measures to extort and intimidate travelers. His statements were made in response to border officials prioritizing national security over free movement regulations at the Karang-Amdalai border between The Gambia and Senegal.
Both Edwin and another ECOWAS Parliament member, Maimuna Ceesay, stressed the need for increased awareness and education about the protocols among citizens and security personnel. They recommended robust sensitization campaigns and the distribution of protocol copies to relevant officials to ensure proper enforcement.
