Recently, a tragic incident occurred as a Palestinian father-of-seven from Gaza passed away in an Israeli prison. The Palestinian prisoners’ affairs authorities confirmed the death of Nasr Salem Said Ziyara, 65 years old, in Al-Ramla prison on 16 August.
Ziyara’s family revealed that he was detained with his son Jihad on 29 December from their home in Gaza City’s Al-Tuffah neighborhood. They reported that Ziyara suffered from diabetes and heart issues, but had no burns on his body upon arrest. However, when he was moved to Al-Ramla prison, he had burns on his lower body and was in a deteriorating health condition.
With Ziyara’s death, the number of Palestinian detainees who have died in Israeli custody since October 7 has now reached 24. The situation is alarming as many other deaths may have gone unreported, with the identities of numerous detainees still unknown.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to massive casualties and destruction, prompting international concerns. South Africa has even accused Israel of genocide at the International Court of Justice. The need for justice and accountability in this ongoing crisis remains crucial.
