Renowned Economist Dr. Kaiser Bengali Resigns from Government Committees Over Austerity Measures
Dr. Kaiser Bengali, a prominent economist, has resigned from three crucial government committees due to the federal government’s austerity measures. In his resignation letter to Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Cabinet Secretary Kamran Afzal, Dr. Bengali expressed concerns about the flawed approach to cost-cutting. He had previously recommended significant cost reduction measures, including closing 17 divisions and 50 government departments to address inefficiencies at the lower levels instead of targeting senior officers.
Dr. Bengali highlighted the current policy of firing lower-grade employees while preserving higher-ranking officers’ jobs, noting that removing senior officers could save up to Rs 30 billion annually. His resignations come amidst warnings of the economy’s impending collapse and the severe impact on household budgets, potentially leading to increased financial distress among the population. The committees he resigned from include the Austerity Committee, the Right-Sizing Committee, and the Government Expenditure Reduction Committee.
