Ukraine launched a surprise offensive into Russia’s Kursk border region as an act of self-defense, according to NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with German newspaper Die Welt.
The offensive caught the Kremlin off guard, with Ukraine claiming significant territorial gains. Stoltenberg asserted that Ukraine has the right to defend itself under international law, even beyond its borders.
The offensive also surprised Kyiv’s allies, with NATO playing no role in the planning. However, Stoltenberg praised Germany for its military support to Ukraine amid budget cuts.
Despite the offensive, the situation remains challenging for Ukraine, especially near the hub of Pokrovsk. Russian troops continue to advance, posing a threat to Ukrainian forces.
