The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is holding the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development (DLRRD) accountable for the failure of four dams in the Western Cape. These dam failures occurred during severe weather in Riverlands, causing significant damage to property and infrastructure. The investigation revealed that the dams were constructed without the necessary licenses.
The DLRRD will be required to provide financial compensation for the infrastructure damage, estimated at around R50 million. A rehabilitation plan for the affected areas must also be presented, along with compliance with relevant legislation. The community and municipality are encouraged to pursue legal action to recover losses.
This transparent action by the DWS emphasizes the importance of accountability and honesty in addressing natural disasters and their consequences.
