This year marks the 20th anniversary of the commissioning and start-up of two significant nuclear power plants in Ukraine – Unit 2 of the Khmelnitsky NPP and Unit 4 of the Rivne NPP. These plants added 2,000 MW·h of basic capacity to the nation’s power system, increasing the share of nuclear generation for the country’s energy needs to over 50 percent.
The stable operation of these nuclear power plants has been crucial in avoiding mass power outages and other consequences of Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The presence of these plants has ensured that over 80 percent of the population’s electricity needs are met.
It is essential to continue the development of the national nuclear power industry to ensure energy independence and accelerated post-war development in Ukraine. New nuclear facilities are necessary for economic development, the production sector, and the business community. The construction of Units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnitsky NPP, as well as the future Units 5 and 6, will play a vital role in addressing power shortages caused by ongoing Russian attacks.
Energoatom is prepared for this development, and along with support from strategic partners, the construction of new nuclear units will contribute to Ukraine’s energy security and advancement. The nuclear industry in Ukraine remains steadfast in its commitment to overcoming challenges, ensuring a stable energy supply for the nation’s future.
