The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has established a sub-committee to evaluate the union’s demands. Both parties have agreed to reconvene on September 6, 2024, following a closed-door meeting at the Ministry of Education in Abuja.
The meeting, attended by ASUU leaders, Minister of Education Tahir Mamman, and ministry officials, lasted for two and a half hours. Mamman announced the formation of a sub-committee to address the union’s demands and resolve any outstanding issues.
ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke voiced optimism that all issues would be resolved before the next meeting, emphasizing the importance of protecting the interests of Nigerian students. ASUU’s demands include a comprehensive university system overhaul, improved infrastructure, academic freedom, sustainable funding, revitalization funds, agreement renegotiation, and earned allowances for lecturers.
