Exciting news for Morocco’s military as they are set to receive an additional 172 upgraded Abrams tanks as part of a 2018 deal through the Excess Defense Articles (EDA) program. Originally delayed due to various factors, the delivery is now expected to proceed, boosting Morocco’s total number of Abrams tanks to 394.
The M1A2 Abrams tanks are known for their advanced features, including a powerful 120mm M256K smoothbore cannon and a top speed of 67 kilometers per hour. This acquisition is part of Morocco’s broader military modernization efforts, which have included receiving advanced weaponry from the United States and Israel.
In addition to the Abrams tanks, Morocco has also received the Barak MX air defense system from Israel and 500 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles from the US. These enhancements to Morocco’s military capabilities are in response to regional tensions and reflect the country’s deepening ties with Israel since normalizing relations in 2020.
