Notting Hill Carnival Opening Day Marred by Violence
London police reported at least three stabbings during the opening day of the annual Notting Hill Carnival, with one victim in critical condition. The Metropolitan Police arrested dozens, including those who assaulted emergency workers. The stabbings involved a 32-year-old woman in critical condition, a 29-year-old, and a 24-year-old with unknown status.
Despite the violence, hundreds of thousands of revelers attended the carnival to celebrate Caribbean music and culture. However, police had to arrest individuals for various offenses, including assault, weapon possession, and drug-related crimes. Before the event, authorities warned attendees to remove face coverings or risk arrest.
The Notting Hill Carnival, dating back to 1958, has grown into a massive two-day celebration. It features colorful floats, calypso dancers, steel bands, and sound systems. After being held online in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, the carnival returned to the streets in 2022.
