The two UCT professors are reflecting on the concerns with the 2022 South African census data and suggesting a way forward.
Last week, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) announced that certain data from the 2022 South African census would not be released, sparking public debate on the census’s reliability. The professors clarify misreported information and express concerns about the census data, stating that rerunning the census is not a viable solution.
Their primary concern is the overestimation of the South African population in 2022, questioning the accuracy of the reported figures. They also highlight discrepancies in population growth patterns at district and municipal levels, expressing worry about misallocation of resources.
The professors emphasize the need for transparency from Stats SA and urge for the release of crucial data on employment, income, fertility, and mortality. They suggest evaluating the 2022 census to understand its shortcomings and recommend starting planning for the 2031 census soon.
