In the event of a hijacking, Bartmann advised remaining calm and following the instructions given by the perpetrators. It is also important to take note of as much information as possible about the hijackers and any potential backup vehicles they may have.
High-demand vehicles like Toyotas, Volkswagens, Fords, and Nissans are particularly vulnerable to car theft, with vehicle hijackings often driven by the black market business. Fidelity Services Group identified the top seven high-risk models for hijacks in South Africa.
- Toyota Fortuner (GD6 and D4D)
- Hilux (GD6 and D4D)
- Corolla Cross and RAV4
- VW Polo (especially hatchbacks)
- Nissan NP 200
- Ford Ranger (double and single cabs)
Criminals may target specific parts of vehicles, such as hubcaps, airbags, batteries, wheels, and headlights. Additionally, certain areas in South Africa have been identified as crime hotspots for hijackings.

- KwaZulu-Natal: Umlazi and Mariannhill
- Western Cape: Philippi East, Harare, Nyanga, Mfuleni, and Delft
