Two Companies Ordered to Compensate Families of Children Poisoned by Toxic Cough Syrup
An Indonesian court has ruled that Afi Farma and CV Samudera Chemical, the companies responsible for distributing toxic cough syrup that led to the deaths of over 200 children, must compensate the affected families. The compensation amounts to 60 million rupiah ($3,850) for each family who lost a child or had a child injured by the medication.
Suspicions were raised in 2022 when children fell seriously ill after consuming what they believed to be common cold medicine. The government recalled over 1,000 syrup-based products after some children died and more than 120 suffered from acute kidney disease.
The court found Afi Farma and CV Samudera at fault, directing them to pay 50 million rupiah for each child’s death and 60 million rupiah for injuries. A criminal court previously found Afi Farma guilty of negligence for allowing ethylene glycol, a harmful chemical, to be present in the syrup. Despite the ruling, Afi Farma continues to deny any wrongdoing.
This case highlights the importance of stringent regulations in the pharmaceutical industry to prevent tragedies like these from occurring again.
