Gabon’s interim president, Gen Oligui Nguema, has implemented new restrictions on government officials by barring them from holidaying abroad and limiting their vacation time to one week. These measures come ahead of next year’s presidential election, hinting at a possible bid by Gen Nguema for the top job. Since seizing power in a coup and ousting his cousin Ali Bongo, Gen Nguema has emphasized his commitment to the public’s best interests. The holiday restrictions are seen as a way to show a contrast to the previous regime, known for lavish overseas trips and property ownership. Despite owning properties in the US himself, Gen Nguema’s crackdown on government officials’ holiday leave may also apply to him. Exceptions for travel will only be granted in cases of “force majeure” or health reasons. This move aims to connect officials with the realities of their country and foster proximity with local populations. And while officials may be confined to exploring the attractions of Gabon, such as its beautiful beaches and world-renowned gorilla safaris, the restrictions serve as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with public service.
