The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has officially stated that the federal government’s ban on rice importation through land borders remains in place. NCS Comptroller-General, Bashir Adeniyi, clarified this during an inspection at the Apapa port, emphasizing that the recent fiscal measures do not include rice importation.
While some varieties of rice are still allowed to be imported for those with foreign exchange access, the restriction on land border importation is unchanged. Adeniyi highlighted that brown rice or rice paddy is now duty-free, with certain guidelines in place for importers.
As part of efforts to lower food prices, the government temporarily suspended import duties on food items like husked brown rice, sorghum, millet, maize, wheat, and beans. This policy, effective from July 15, will run until December 31, 2024.
Overall, the aim is to regulate rice importation, ensure compliance with import regulations, and promote food security in Nigeria. Importers are advised to adhere to the guidelines set by the Nigeria Customs for a smooth importation process.
