In a recent development, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry refuted Russian claims of Ukraine planning attacks on nuclear power plants with “dirty bombs.” This came after Russian state-controlled media alleged that Ukrainian forces were targeting the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine and the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant in Russia. Heorhii Tykhyi, the Ministry’s spokesperson, dismissed these claims as part of “insane Russian propaganda,” emphasizing Ukraine’s commitment to nuclear safety.
Furthermore, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s inspection found no evidence of undeclared nuclear activities in Ukraine. Amidst escalating tensions, Andrii Kovalenko from Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council warned of potential Russian nuclear provocations, highlighting the need for vigilance.
As Ukrainian forces advance in Kursk Oblast, near the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, concerns for nuclear safety have grown. The Zaporizhzhia plant, under Russian occupation, faces increased risks. Ukrainian accusations of Russian attempts to sabotage the nuclear plant have raised alarms, although the IAEA confirmed that nuclear safety remains intact.
The situation underlines the critical importance of independent journalism in Ukraine to counter misinformation and propaganda.
