The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare disburses N63bn under Basic Health Care Provision Fund

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority, has distributed N63bn through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund since its inception in 2019. This initiative aims to ensure that every Nigerian has access to essential healthcare services, especially the most vulnerable populations.

During a media engagement in Abuja, Dr Kelechi Ohiri, representing the NHIA Director General, revealed that all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory have established State Social Insurance Agencies. Approximately 160,000 citizens are benefiting from the BHCPF, with 8,200 facilities receiving direct disbursements nationwide.

The NHIA has developed a financial reporting framework to guide the fund’s operations, ensuring transparency and efficiency. The fund, sourced from the federal government’s revenue and donor contributions, focuses on strengthening the health system, enhancing healthcare delivery, and increasing access to essential services.

With the Sector-Wide Approach initiative, Nigeria aims to create a unified, transparent, and accountable healthcare sector by 2027, leveraging local, state, and federal resources for better healthcare outcomes.
