Four Yemeni detainees have been held in a Russian deportation centre outside of Moscow after being arrested three months ago. Sources close to their families revealed that the detainees staged a five-day hunger strike to protest their detention.
The men, Mohammed Al-Murai, Ibrahim Salim, Mohamed Al-Qudsi, and Khader Al-Sawad, were arrested for overstaying their visas. One detainee’s health deteriorated, prompting the hunger strike. The detainees are facing harsh conditions and fines before deportation.
Despite pleas from the men and their families, the Yemeni embassy in Moscow has not effectively coordinated with Russian authorities. The detainees have appealed to human rights organizations for pressure on the Yemeni government for repatriation.
There have been reports of Yemenis joining the Russian army in Ukraine, with at least three Yemenis killed in combat. Russia has recruited soldiers from various countries, including the Arab world, with promises of citizenship and financial gains.
