Border Clash: Afghan Civilians Killed in Exchange of Fire with Pakistani Forces
Recent clashes along the northern border between Afghan and Pakistani forces resulted in the tragic deaths of three civilians – a woman and two children. The conflict near the Torkham border crossing in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province escalated on Monday, with both sides pointing fingers at each other for initiating the clash.
The dispute often arises from disagreements over construction near the Durand line, a contested border drawn by the British in 1896. The Afghan interior ministry accused Pakistani forces of targeting civilian homes, while Afghanistan’s defence ministry spokesperson claimed that Pakistanis fired first when Afghan forces sought to build a post near the Durand line.
The situation intensified with heavy weaponry used by both sides, resulting in injuries to Pakistani soldiers and the closure of the Torkham border crossing. The ongoing tensions between the two nations have been fueled by claims of cross-border attacks and construction disputes since the Taliban took power in 2021.
Despite the conflicting narratives, the loss of innocent lives underscores the urgent need for peaceful resolutions and de-escalation along the Afghan-Pakistani border.
