The Brazilian Report on Tuesday won the 2024 Digiday Media Award for Best Story for their scoop on the plan to hack Brazil’s chief electoral justice. The award-winning story uncovered hacker Walter Delgatti’s attempt to clone the SIM card of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes to dig up damaging information.
Other notable winners of the 2024 Digiday Media Awards include TIME magazine, Salesforce, The Wall Street Journal, The Hershey Company, and Fortune. The Brazilian Report’s investigation provided crucial evidence regarding a conspiracy to discredit Justice Moraes, who has been a target of the Brazilian far right.
The story revealed that Delgatti was hired by far-right Congresswoman Carla Zambelli, leading to their involvement in a hacking and fraud scheme targeting the judiciary. Delgatti’s confessions implicated Zambelli and former President Jair Bolsonaro in attempts to undermine the electoral system, ultimately resulting in Delgatti’s 20-year prison sentence.
