North Korea Sends Trash-Laden Inflatables Toward South Korea
North Korea has launched approximately 240 garbage-filled balloons toward South Korea as part of an ongoing campaign that began in late May. The trash-filled balloons, some of which landed in South Korea, are in retaliation for balloons carrying propaganda leaflets being sent to the North.
South Korea’s military confirmed that the balloons contained scraps of paper and plastic bottles, with no hazardous substances detected in their payload. This recent launch marked the 11th time North Korea has sent such balloons to its southern neighbor.
While North Korea temporarily halted the balloon launches in early June, they have since resumed, prompting South Korean authorities to denounce the actions as “shameful and base for a normal country.” Tensions between the two countries have escalated in recent months due to missile tests by North Korea and joint military drills between South Korea and the US.
This latest provocation highlights the ongoing animosity between the two nations as they continue to engage in a war of words and unconventional tactics along their heavily fortified border.
