Authorities in Pochalla North County of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area are urgently seeking help as a ‘mysterious zoonotic disease’ sweeps through the region, causing the deaths of more than 101 cattle in just a week. The disease, with pus-filled blisters on the hides of the affected cattle, was first observed last week and has quickly spread, leaving devastation in its wake.
Commissioner Gilo Ochan Gilo of Pochalla North County stated that 50 cows in Otallo, 25 in Ajwara, and 18 in Burator have already died, with 8 more deaths in Omila. The cows affected by the disease stop grazing and eventually succumb to the illness. This outbreak is unprecedented in the area, and urgent veterinary medical intervention is needed to contain its spread.
Gilo emphasized the seriousness of the situation and urged national government and aid agencies to step in to help. The disease has also impacted Pochala South County, highlighting the urgent need for assistance to prevent further losses among the cattle population.
