Hamas has urged mediators to prioritize implementing the existing ceasefire deal rather than engaging in new talks that might prolong the conflict in Gaza. The call was made in response to an upcoming summit proposed by US, Qatari, and Egyptian mediators scheduled for August 15. While Hamas did not confirm its participation, it expressed doubt about joining. On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed sending a negotiation team to the summit.
Hamas emphasized its previous flexibility in accepting ceasefire proposals and urged mediators to focus on the most recent deal agreed upon on July 2. The group demanded that the occupiers abide by the terms of the agreement. Additional negotiations could only stall the process and prolong the suffering of the Palestinian people.
The indirect talks between Israel and Hamas have been ongoing since January, with a proposed outline for ending the conflict gaining support from US President Biden and the UN Security Council. However, Netanyahu’s shifting commitments and new demands have raised concerns of sabotaging the peace process, potentially for political reasons.
Recent escalations and attacks in Gaza, including a deadly strike on a school-turned-shelter, are seen by Hamas as indications that Israel is not genuinely seeking a resolution. The casualties in Gaza highlight the urgent need for swift action to end the conflict and ensure the safety of civilians.
