More than 70 prominent Australians, including former prime ministers, premiers, union leaders, and medical experts, have joined forces in an open letter urging the federal government to ban gambling advertising.
The letter addressed to Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton presses for the elimination of the “tsunami” of gambling ads within three years.
“We have to treat gambling and the ads just like we treated tobacco ads,” stated Tim Costello, Chief Executive of the Alliance for Gambling Reform.
Former premiers Dominic Perrottet and Jeff Kennett have also backed the initiative, highlighting the devastating impact of gambling losses in Australia.
Australians lose $25 billion annually to gambling, making it imperative for action to be taken.
The ban on gambling ads could have financial implications on local companies, but supporters argue that compensation for broadcasters and a significant step towards social responsibility are necessary.
