Somalia’s Cabinet approved a bill to implement universal suffrage, replacing the current system of indirect voting. This move marks a significant step towards democratization in the country, ending a long-standing practice of lawmakers electing the president and representatives.
Despite initial plans for direct voting in 2020, political disputes and security concerns delayed the transition. The new election rules aim to give citizens the power to vote individually, promising a more inclusive and transparent electoral process.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud introduced the policy last year, emphasizing the importance of empowering the Somali people through democratic practices. However, the implementation of universal suffrage is expected to face logistical and security challenges, particularly due to the influence of Al Shabaab in various regions.
