An alleged plot to carry out political assassinations on U.S. soil, including potentially of former President Donald Trump, has been revealed by the Justice Department. Asif Merchant, a Pakistani man with ties to Iran, was charged with recruiting individuals for the killings, unknowingly paying undercover law enforcement officers $5,000 as an advance for the hit.
While court documents do not identify the intended targets, there have been previous threats on Trump’s life from Iran, prompting increased security measures. FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland have warned of Iran’s aggressive behavior and the ongoing threats against Americans.
Merchant, who frequently traveled to Iran, Syria, and Iraq, was detained following his arrest. The foiled plot was traced back to April when he flew to the U.S. to recruit participants. Despite his attempts to carry out the scheme, he was apprehended before leaving the country.
