Exclusive Insights into the SPLM-IO’s Stance on the Ongoing Tumaini Initiative and Elections in South Sudan
Puok Both Baluang, the acting press secretary for SPLM-IO leader Riek Machar, reiterated their solid stance on not participating in the Tumaini Initiative in Nairobi unless their concerns are addressed. These concerns include the implementation of key articles of the 2018 peace agreement and the need for a meaningful extension of the government’s tenure.
In a recent interview, Both highlighted the unresolved issues raised by the SPLM-IO which must be addressed before their participation. They await the return of President Salva Kiir for further discussions to reach a consensus as a one-government delegation to the Tumaini talks.
The SPLM-IO emphasized the importance of inclusive participation and peaceful political settlement, expressing doubts about the feasibility of holding elections in December given the current situation. They called for a general evaluation of the peace agreement’s implementation and hinted at the possibility of extending the transitional government’s tenure, subject to regional guarantees and clear objectives like drafting a permanent constitution.
As South Sudan navigates through these challenging times, the SPLM-IO remains committed to finding sustainable solutions for lasting peace and stability in the country.
